RV Inverter Installation, Repair & Upgrades
An rv inverter turns battery power into clean 120V AC so outlets, microwaves, laptops, TVs, and CPAPs work off-grid. Many rigs use an inverter/charger with a built-in transfer switch for shore or generator pass-through and smart charging. The right plan—pure sine wave inverter, correct wattage, a sized battery bank, safe cabling and fusing, and clear settings—delivers quiet, reliable power and longer battery life.
Traveling RV Technicians (TRVT) designs, installs, repairs, and tunes inverter systems; integrates LiFePO₄ (lifepo₄) lithium batteries with BMS; adds DC charger (DC-to-DC) support; and ties everything into your converter charger, power distribution centers, breaker panel, EMS, and solar panels for a stable electrical system.
What an RV Inverter Does (and Why It Matters)
An inverter converts 12V (or 24V) DC into 120V AC for the circuits you want alive away from hookups—kitchen plugs, work outlets, entertainment, and small tools. A combo inverter/charger charges the bank on shore or generator, then inverts when unplugged. A pure sine wave inverter protects electronics and motors, reduces heat, and cuts nuisance shutdowns. Good voltage regulation keeps the flow of electricity smooth so appliances start cleanly and control boards stay happy.
Right-Sizing: Watts, Surge, Runtime & Discharge Rates
We size to real loads and how you camp. A 2000W inverter fits light kitchens and office gear; a 3000W inverter handles heavier duty or short high power spikes (A/C with soft-start is case-by-case). We check surge, power factor, and allowed discharge rates from the battery bank, then model runtime, voltage drop, and recharge time so the plan matches your routine.
Subpanel Layout, Transfer Switch & Bonding Rules
The cleanest design uses an inverter subpanel that feeds only the outlets you want live off-grid (galley, entertainment, office). We place the automatic transfer switch (ATS) so shore/generator power never backfeeds the inverter and follow neutral/ground bonding rules so GFCI/AFCI devices behave. We verify breaker sizes, label each branch circuit, and keep wire runs short and neat at the breaker panel for fast, safe service.
Cabling, Fusing & Safety (No Compromises)
High-current DC must be engineered, not guessed. We size cables for length and amps, use tinned copper, and crimp and seal every lug. Main fusing is ANL or Class-T within inches of the battery bank; subfeeds use MIDI/MEGA as needed. We install Blue Sea–style bus bars, solid chassis grounds, strain relief, and real ventilation. Correct parts protect the electrical wiring from short circuits and keep runs cool during long draws.
Solar, MPPT & Hybrid Assist
Solar panels extend time off-grid when array size, MPPT solar charge controller, and bank capacity are matched. We set bulk/absorption/float for Flooded and AGM, and select the lithium profile for lifepo₄. On hybrid inverter platforms (shore or small generator plus battery), the system can cover brief spikes without tripping breakers. Paired with energy management systems (EMS) and a quality surge protector, you avoid breaker trips, brownouts, and board damage.
Diagnostics & Common Problems We Fix
Low-voltage or over-temp shutdowns under modest load. Transfer switch chatter or no pass-through on shore power. GFCI trips from incorrect bonding. High idle draw, loud fans, odd fault codes. “Works on generator but not shore” (or the reverse). Hidden voltage drop from undersized cables or corroded lugs. We meter, load-test, and thermal-scan to identify the root cause and correct it for good.
Integration with Chargers, DC-to-DC & Charge Profiles
Charging hardware must match chemistry. We configure converter charger, inverter/charger, and regulated dc charger (alternator) for Flooded, AGM, or lithium batteries. Setpoints include bulk / absorption / float for lead-acid and a dedicated lithium profile for lifepo₄. We verify voltage regulation, confirm wiring at power distribution centers, and document final values so devices cooperate instead of fighting each other.
