RV Switch Repair, Replacement & Panel Upgrades

Switches run the coach. From rocker switches for lights to momentary DPDT controls for slides and awnings, the right parts keep your rv electrical systems simple and safe. Heat, flicker, or a short circuit at a switch can take out lights, pumps, jacks, or steps—and damage electrical equipment down the line.

Traveling RV Technicians (TRVT) provides mobile RV switch diagnostics, replacement, LED-friendly dimmer installs, waterproof upgrades, and wiring cleanup. We verify ratings for 12 - volt DC power and 120 volts, size wire and fusing, and label circuits at the breaker panel and power distribution centers for reliable service.

Switch Types & What They Do

RV controls fall into a few clear groups:

  • SPST / SPDT / DPDT (single/dual/multi-throw)

  • Momentary vs maintained (spring-return vs stays on)

  • Polarity-reversing DPDT for slide and awning motors

  • Lighted rocker switches and push button switches with indicators

  • Rotary selector and battery disconnect switches for main feeds

  • 120V AC switches for select electrical devices on utility power

  • We match style and contact rating to the load so the power supply stays stable.

Fast Diagnosis for Dead or Intermittent Switches

Most failures trace to heat, vibration, or wrong ratings. We:

  • Load-test the circuit, not just continuity

  • Check voltage drop across switch contacts under use

  • Inspect crimp quality, spades, and boots for heat marks

  • Thermal-scan suspect wiring for hidden resistance

  • Verify correct backlight wiring (no phantom draw or “ghosting”)

  • This approach fixes the cause, not just the symptom.

Slide, Awning, Step & Jack Controls

Motion systems need the right switch logic:

  • Momentary, polarity-reversing DPDT for slide motors

  • Awning switches with lockout so wind sensors still protect gear

  • Entry step switches that respect ignition interlocks

  • Hydraulic jack motor contactor triggers (with valve coil switches)

  • We keep interlocks intact and protect boards from back-EMF with diodes.

Water Pump, Tank Heater & Appliance Switches

Wet areas demand sealed hardware and GFCI upstream. We install:

  • Water pump switches with indicator lights and proper fusing

  • Tank heater switches with guarded toggles and pilot lamps

  • Range hood, bath fan, and porch light switches with weatherproof boots

  • Clear labels reduce mistakes and protect delicate devices.

Battery Disconnect & Emergency Combine

For storage and service, the battery disconnect switch must carry high current without heat. We service:

  • Manual rotary disconnects (marine-grade)

  • Latching relay panels with momentary switches (Intellitec/Precision Circuits)

  • Emergency start/combine switches to jump the chassis from house

  • We size cable, choose heavy duty components, and document the path to avoid repeat failures.

Multiplex Keypads & Touch Switch Panels

When a “switch” is a keypad, the rules change. We support Firefly Vegatouch, Spyder Controls, Silverleaf, Precision Circuits (PCS), Intellitec, KIB:

  • Replace failed keypads and bezel plates

  • Fix CAN bus stubs, terminators, and ground references

  • Re-map outputs so the right branch circuits respond

  • Update firmware and back up configuration

  • This restores clean control without random page loss or timeouts.

120V Switches, GFCI Zones & Code-Aware Choices

Select 120V locations use switches on utility power. We:

  • Install 15A/20A rated devices in dry areas and weather-resistant parts outside

  • Keep baths, galleys, and exterior outlets protected by ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)

  • Verify box fill, strain relief, and bonding so higher voltages don’t arc

  • Proper parts prevent nuisance trips and protect the coach at power pedestals.

Installation Standards: Ratings, Wiring & Sealing

Good installs prevent electrical issues:

  • Choose switches with the correct DC/AC amp rating and inrush margin

  • Size wire gauge to run length and load; keep harnesses supported

  • Add sealed boots (IP65/IP67) where water or dust can intrude

  • Label at the fuse panel and breaker panel; document schematics

  • Use quality crimp tools, heat-shrink, and strain relief for every termination
