RV Tank Valve Replacement, Cable Repair & Leak Stops
A drip at the cap, a handle that won’t budge, or sewer odor in the bay means your RV tank valves need attention. Vibration, dried seals, misrouted cables, and worn blades cause black tank valve and gray tank valve leaks.
Traveling RV Technicians (TRVT) provides mobile waste-valve diagnostics, gate-valve replacement, cable and handle repairs, electric valve upgrades, manifold rebuilds, macerator hookups, and cold-weather protection. We fix the cause first, then install parts that hold up to road shock and heat—so your dump days are clean, fast, and drama-free.
Symptoms & Assessment (Find the Real Leak)
We start with a clean, step-by-step check:
Drip at the termination cap, slow seep between dumps, or bay odor
Stuck tank valve or mushy handle travel (cable kinks, sheath slip)
Blade closes but won’t seal (paper at the gate, torn seals, warped flanges)
Twin valves stacked wrong or a wye manifold out of alignment
Freeze damage at the knife body or couplers
You get a plain report: cause → fix → parts list, so you know exactly what failed and why.
Gate Valves 101 (Sizes, Sequencing & Seals)
Most RVs use knife-gate valves: 3″ for black, 1.5″ for gray.
We verify orientation, true the flanges, and torque hardware evenly so the blade rides square.
Seal kits are EPDM/Santoprene; we never use petroleum products that swell rubber.
Proper sequence: dump black first, then gray to rinse the hose.
If long sits cause solids to hang at the gate, we add back-flush options and teach the rinse routine.
Electric & Remote Valves (Push-Button Dumping)
Want hands-off operation? We install and service:
Valterra E-VALVE / EZ-Valve, Barker Auto-Drain, and select Thetford electric waste-valves.
Weather-sealed switches, proper 12-volt DC wiring, correct fuse sizing, and clean grounds to stop nuisance faults.
Manual overrides so you can still dump if power fails.
Electric valves are great for hard-to-reach bays and cold-weather gloves.
Manifolds, Termination Fittings & Drip Control
A tidy termination makes every dump faster:
Rebuild wye manifolds; square the faces so gaskets seal and blades don’t bind.
Upgrade caps, bayonet or cam-lock fittings, and O-rings; add a secondary termination valve at the outlet if seepage persists between uses.
Clear 90° elbows confirm flow and help with backflush checks.
We set the outlet height and angle for a true downhill run to the sewer.
Seals, Blades & Rebuild vs. Replace
Not every leak needs a whole valve:
Rebuild kits (blade, two body seals, hardware) fix clean bodies with straight flanges.
Full valve replacement makes sense when the body is warped, the bore is scored, or the mounting pattern is wrong.
We clean the track, remove paper at the gate, and lubricate with valve-safe products (no petroleum).
A fresh, square gate seals tight and pulls smooth.
Cold-Weather Protection (Don’t Let Valves Freeze)
Ice can crack a new valve in one night. We add:
Heated underbelly checks, foam wraps, and low-draw valve heaters on fused circuits
Insulated skirting and best-practice dump timing (never leave black open; avoid “trickle” gray that builds ice)
Proper slope and short hose runs; GFCI protection for heated gear where used
Your valves work in shoulder season and real winter stops.
Tank Flushing, Rinsing & Sensor Accuracy
Good rinsing = fewer clogs and better readings. We install and service:
Black tank flush sprayers and safe backflow prevention
Backflush tees and clear elbows so you can see when the tank is actually clean
SeeLevel external sensors for accurate levels without in-tank probes that foul
Routine rinse + reliable sensors = fewer surprises on travel day.
Macerators & Special Setups (When Gravity Won’t Cooperate)
For uphill or long runs:
Install/repair macerator pumps (Thetford Sani-Con, Flojet) with fused 12-V feeds, proper hose, and check valves where needed.
Dedicated non-potable discharge hoses, quick-disconnects, and labeled switches.
Teach short duty cycles and fresh-water rinses so impellers live a long life.
Macerators keep sites clean when gravity can’t.
